roots of kindness.

a single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions,
and the roots spring up and make new trees.

inspiration found among the trees.

my papaw moved to savannah about 13 years ago. my mamaw passed away and he found a new love and a new zipcode at the same time. although it is sad to have him farther than a 20 minute car ride away, it is nice to travel to beautiful savannah for visits.

this past weekend, we made a trip to support my sister's boyfriend {who participated in the rock n' roll 1/2 marathon} and to pay a visit to my papaw and sheila. savannah is such a beautiful place - you go from the historic downtown area's century old architecture and even older trees to the beautiful marshes and beaches of the towns just outside of the city. i couldn't keep my eyes off of the many trees we passed will walking downtown. my first impulse was to climb them all, but i settle for a few snapshots with my iphone.

once the race festivities were complete {and we sampled several beers from the local breweries} we headed to midway to visit our family. i continued to be inspired by the beauty of the land and was in the mood for fitness after watching more than 20,000 people run that morning. my sister and i decided to find our equanimity on the edge of the beautiful river.

i am completely obsessed with yoga and running these days - it doesn't surprise me that the beauty of the landscape and the determination of the runners put me in the mood to strike a few yogi poses.

{handmade} a classy halloween.

now, i didn't actually hand make my costume, but i did put it together. since i was little, i have always loved audrey hepburn. i may not have seen her films in full, but i was attracted to her classic beauty, quirkiness, and amazing clothes. i decided to pay homage to her this year with my rendition of her character in breakfast at tiffany's, holly golightly.

i started with a simple black dress from my closet; added a tiara, some black elbow-length gloves, and a borrowed cigarette holder; and finished it off with an up-do and a pearl necklace {both made by me!}.

although it was quite chilly on saturday when i wore my costume {and i spent most of the day with my husband's jacket draped around my shoulders}, i felt like a celebrity when a lady asked if she could take my picture to show her daughter, who also loves audrey. i was even able to re-enact one of the famous photos from the film. my mom wants me to frame it and hang it in my house - i may just do that. it will be a great memory of my time imitating such a classy lady.

{handmade} wine rack.

i have always wanted to hang an old window in my house. i just love old things that are re-purposed. during our most recent antique-hunting adventure, we discovered that some vendors had turned old windows into shelves. brilliant! since we couldn't afford the ones already made, we made it our goal to make our own...after all, it is more fun that way!

we purchased an old window {with great character} for $10 at the depot at gibson mill and then headed over to lowes to gather the rest of our materials. a few pieces of lumber later, we were putting together our shelf. unfortunately we had to paint it since we mixed old wood with new, but our careful color choice preserved the antique feel.

now we have a unique and eclectic way to store {and display} some of our wine glasses and cheap wine.

a little taste of my heritage.

as a kid, my oma and opa (german for grandmother and grandfather) always planned a trip to a little german town in georgia called helen. my memories of those times are full of funny hats, chicken dances, odd-looking architecture and lots of kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes). although my experience as an adult was much different, i still truly enjoyed getting a taste of my family's german heritage. taking a trip to germany would obviously be my first choice in gaining this experience, but for now, helen will do just fine.

unforgettable.

i have a fairly good ability to remember people that i have met; if not their names, then at least who they are and that i have met them before. it seems lately that i am a very forgettable person...and i don't like it.

i started my current job in march. my duties consist of taking photographs of events and writing stories about people and things that go on here {among other things}. in doing all of this, i am constantly walking around, attending events, interviewing people, taking photos of people, etc... in other words, i get around :)

i have encountered two people, just today, that did not know who i was. both of these people i have spoken to on numerous occasions. the first was part of a story i wrote recently, and she came to my office to personally thank me for it; the second i speak to almost everyday.

i am not upset with these people because obviously i am the problem, not them. considering the fact that this happens to me on a daily basis, i have to believe that i am doing something wrong. i want to be someone that people remember. i have to figure out a way to be more outgoing, more recognizable, more unforgettable.

{lovely lyrics} something to say.

don't ask me where i'm going cause i could never prove that
but i do have something to say...
